At James Engineering, we design and manufacture oscillation dampers for chimneys and tall structures exposed to wind-induced vibration. Our damper systems are engineered to reduce oscillation, improve structural stability, and help extend the service life of your installation.
We provide bespoke solutions tailored to the natural frequency, operating conditions, and structural requirements of each project. Whether you require a Tuned Mass Damper, Box Damper, or Tuned Liquid Damper, our team can deliver a practical and effective solution designed around your application.
Damper Solutions
Wind-induced movement can have a significant impact on the performance and longevity of tall chimney structures. By incorporating a correctly designed oscillation damper, it is possible to reduce vibration, minimise stress on the structure, and improve long-term operational reliability.
At James Engineering, we manufacture three main types of oscillation dampers, each designed to control movement in different ways while delivering dependable performance in demanding environments.

Tuned Mass Damper (TMD)
A Tuned Mass Damper is designed to reduce chimney movement by counteracting oscillation with a precisely tuned secondary mass. Typically installed near the top of the chimney, the system consists of a large mass combined with a spring system or shock absorber.
The TMD is tuned to the natural frequency of the chimney so that it moves at the same frequency but in the opposite phase. As the chimney sways due to wind loading, the damper absorbs kinetic energy, reduces motion, and helps dissipate vibration energy as heat.

Box Damper
Box dampers are an effective solution for reducing oscillation caused by vortex shedding, which is a common source of movement in tall structures. Positioned strategically at the top of the chimney, they are designed to influence airflow behaviour and reduce the effects of wind-induced vibration.
Like other tuned systems, the Box Damper is designed to respond to the natural frequency of the chimney and move in opposition to the structural motion. This opposing movement helps absorb energy, reduce sway, and improve overall chimney stability.

Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD)
A Tuned Liquid Damper uses the movement of liquid within a container to reduce structural vibration. The unit is partially filled with liquid, usually water or a water-glycol mixture, which moves as the chimney or structure vibrates.
This sloshing motion is tuned to match the natural frequency of the structure, allowing the liquid to absorb part of the vibrational energy. The damping effect is created by the movement and friction of the liquid within the container, helping to reduce oscillation and improve performance.
