Project Summary
James Engineering Constructions Ltd (JEL) was appointed by WBPS (Rehlko) to deliver specialist structural steelwork for the Newport Data Centre, one of the UK’s leading critical data infrastructure facilities. Spanning seven project phases, JEL provided a complete design, engineering, fabrication, supply and installation solution for the generator support steelwork package, ensuring a robust and efficient system capable of meeting modern data centre demands.
The project focused on developing a high‑performance steel support system to enable the installation of large‑scale generators and E‑POD enclosures. Designed for operational flexibility, the structure allowed lifting operations both above and below the framework using mobile cranes - significantly optimising build sequencing, reducing installation time and improving overall programme efficiency.
Project Details
James Engineering coordinated all works across multiple live phases within a complex site environment. Installation was often performed above existing generator enclosures, requiring advanced planning, rigorous safety management, and exceptional precision by JEL’s experienced site teams.
Alongside the core generator support frames, JEL engineered, fabricated and installed a comprehensive package of access steelwork, including elevated walkways, staircases, fixed ladders, and maintenance platforms. Each element provided safe and permanent access to critical equipment, supporting both construction and long‑term operational needs.
All components were manufactured from high‑quality structural steel and hot‑dip galvanised for enhanced protection and corrosion resistance. Fabrication and installation were completed in line with BS EN 1090-1 Execution Class 2 and controlled through JEL’s ISO 9001‑certified quality management system, guaranteeing full compliance and quality assurance at every stage.
The Newport Data Centre project highlights James Engineering’s proven capability in data centre steelwork design and fabrication, delivering durable, compliant and cost‑efficient steel structures that support mission‑critical infrastructure across the globe.
